A Library Day in the Life – Day 4

Today I will be on the reference desk from 12:45 until 5:30 when we close.  The reference desk has been very quiet as the summer semester winds down.    Yesterday when I was on the desk I had no reference questions but after we officially closed I was helping a student trying to recover a document she  thought she saved on one of our public computers.

This morning I have been working on the reminder letter we send out via email about what patrons have out.  We are trying to come up with better wording and at the same time encourage people to retrun items they no longer need.

I have also checked G+ and Facebook for new posts.

A Library Day in the Life – Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of LibDay7. I wrote several blog posts yesterday covering Google+ and other topics.  today I have new items to catalog. I am also doing a shift on QuestionPoint this afternoon.  I am reviewing MARC records from Films On Demand to decide if we want to load them in our catalog.  If they don’t have OCLC numbers we might not load them. Without OCLC numbers it is not possible to search them through our OCLC based web opac.  I do not understand why any vendor provides MARC records without OCLC numbers.  One of our ebook vendors provides MARC records without them.  It flies in the face of common sense to me.

A Library Day in the Life

This is Day One of Library Day in the Life Project (Round 7). I will be posting at least once a day this week about my day and what I am working on.

Today is a typical Monday here. Ijust compiled statistics for database sessions for the previous year. We had 200,638 database sessions for 2010-2011 up from 127,121 for 2009-2010 school year.  This is probably as a result of our new program with the Writing Center.

I am investigating the best way of doing once a month email courtesy notices to our patrons. We are switching to a semester loan for our books for all patrons. We will send out a courtesy notice once a month listing books the patron has out and asking them to return the ones they no longer need.  This will greatly lighten workloads at the circulation desk.

I am also working on cataloging of continuations.  The Provost’s secretary will be over this morning so I can help her set up email on her Blackberry.  I am also reviewing the latest posts on Google+ , WordPress and Librarians Facebook Group, and Twitter.

I will be on the reference desk from 3 to 5:30 pm today.
