TC3 IDS Search: our future catalog

I just sent the email below to all of the library staff at TC3.

From: Wilfred Drew
To: Library Group
Subject: IDS Search: our future catalog

This summer we will be moving to using IDS Search as our new web interface to our collection.  It is based on WorldCat Local with added functionality coming out of the IDS Project (ILLIAD) as headquartered at SUNY Geneseo.  It is a very simple and very powerful interface that pulls in item status information from our library and other libraries using IDS.  We have some decisions to make as to how we want it to look (colors and logo only), what will be the default search (simple or advanced) that we link to, what will the scope of the initial search be (TC3, TC3 and SUNY Cortland, all IDS Quick Delivery libraries), and also what additional links we want to appear down the left side in search results. Below are links to review:

TC3 IDS search: http://search.idsproject.org/index.php?view=ids&oclc_symbol=VXT&search_scope=my_library

TC3 Advanced Search: http://search.idsproject.org/index.php?oclc_symbol=VXT&view=ids&search_form=advanced&query_value[0]=&query_value[1]=&query_value[2]=&query_relation[0]=all&query_index[0]=kw&sort_keys=Relevance&search_scope=my_library

As part of our web page (testing only!): http://www.tc3.edu/library/defaultids.asp

Other IDS Search Libraries: http://search.idsproject.org/

Background / Features – IDS Search: http://idsproject.org/Tools/IDSSearch.aspx

Please note that most of our changes will be cosmetic in nature.  I can’t add or delete features.  The catalog is under constant development and testing so more features will be added.

Take a look so we can discuss this in the near future.

I am also doing work on our current catalog and records that will help make IDS Search results better. I am also working on making sure all of our records, except for course reserve and equipment, are on OCLC.  This includes eBooks.

A Special Request

I received this email from a long time friend and colleague, Ed Rivenburgh. Please read and act on it.

Colleagues:

Please read the message below from Loretta Ebert, Director of the New York State Research Library. Loretta is a strong supporter of the IDS Project and the New York State Library is a member of, and great contributor to, the IDS Project.

This summer’s IDS Conference (August 2 & 3) will be at the Albany Law School and the Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Loretta and her staff are hosting a very special conference reception Tuesday evening at the New York State Museum.

I have been an admirer of the State Librarian, Bernie Margolis, for many years. Bernie is one of those library administrators who truly embodies a willingness to speak truth to power. For ten years, Bernie fought the good fight for all our libraries as he led the Boston Public Library to dramatically improve its services while battling the desire for debilitating control over BPL’s activities by some influential politicians.

In his first year as our State Librarian, Bernie quickly became a leader representing the best interests of all libraries and was beginning to work closely with other statewide library organizations, including the IDS Project. Then Bernie received the devastating news that he had leukemia. For almost a year now Bernie has demonstrated incredible true grit while battling this blood cancer. We all want Bernie to get well very soon and join us again as a leader for New York State libraries.

Ed

Dear Friends,
On January 8th and 9th my husband Ken and I will be running in the
Disney Marathon and Half-Marathon with Team Leukemia. We are running in
honor of State Librarian, Bernie Margolis, who has been courageously
battling this disease for nearly a year now. The funds we collect doing
this will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for research
to develop new treatments and new knowledge in curing and preventing
these blood cancers. We will run a combined total of 39.3 miles (1.5 marathons) an event
called the Goofy. You may wish to sponsor us based on mileage to
motivate us to finish! However, you may also simply donate a set
amount. We are paying for our own travel to Orlando. The full amount
of your donation is tax deductible. You can make an online donation at this link:
http://pages.teamintraining.org/uny/wdw11/TeamEbert
Or send a check directly to us at Ken and Loretta Ebert, 11 Oxford
Park, Ballston lake, NY 12019
We are grateful for your consideration in supporting this venture and
for your recognition of Bernie’s far greater achievements in tests of
endurance and fortitude.
Thank you,
Loretta Ebert

TC3 version of IDS search #IDSCONF10

I have the TC3 version of IDS Search working in our tabbed search box.  Here is a test page to try it:

http://www.tc3.edu/library/defaultids.asp

Also, here it is as a standalone search box on the IDS server:

#IDSCONF10 — IDS Future (Administrator Track) (tag:IDSCONF10))

August 3, 2010 — Wednesday Session #1 & 2 (11:00 am – 12:50 am)

• IDS Future (Administrator Track)

The IDS Project is rapidly growing in size and evolving in complexity. As directors of IDS libraries, we need to discuss the major opportunities and challenges the Project is facing as we continue developing a nationally recognized and quite unique resource-sharing cooperative:

  • IDS now offers an "article only" membership to special libraries, including medical and legal, that have very few books to loan, do not use LAND, but are ready to share their incredible print and electronic journal collections.
  • The New York Public Library is a wonderful IDS Project member. Another large urban public library and a major public library system In New York, both operating ILLiad, may be interested in joining the IDS Project. The collections of large public libraries strongly complement those of our academic libraries and would raise fill rates.
  • The LAND delivery system is all too frequently not meeting its contractual delivery performance standards. Is it "good enough"? Can it be fixed? Are there viable, cost-effective alternatives?
  • The IDS Project is exploring a subscription to Google Books as a potential "game-changer" resource-sharing strategy. Learn more about this potential strategy and how it might serve our Project.
  • The new IDS Search engine will be released to all interested IDS libraries this summer. It is a high-quality union catalog with major scoping capability from local to international. It provides users with an excellent discovery tool for quick, no fee, inter-library delivery of over 33 million books and media items held within the IDS Project. What role will IDS Search play in our libraries? Will it replace or supplement the union catalogs we now offer users?
  • Union catalogs, such as IDS Search, operate off of the OCLC WorldCat API platform. Library holdings in local catalogs and WorldCat must match for effective user retrieval. Yet many of us have major discrepancies between these two record sources. In addition to OCLC’s offer of a free one-time reclamation service to synchronize our records, what options and work flow strategies exist to maintain accurate holdings critical to the IDS Project libraries?
  • Are we ready to integrate components of our ILL and acquisitions/collection development operations by adopting GIST components within our libraries? How might this affect staff assignments and budget? How can cooperative collection development work with GIST?

During these two sessions for library administrators, the IDS Project administrative team needs your advice and counsel to make the wise decisions that will shape a strong future for IDS to serve our libraries.

I wonder why we would expand the mission of IDS just because others asked us to. What do WE want and need? Decide that way. #idsconf10
