Don’t kill America’s databook – The Washington Post [http://www.washingtonpost.com/]

If you want to know something about America, there are few better places to start than the “Statistical Abstract of the United States.” Published annually by the Census Bureau, the Stat Abstract assembles about 1,400 tables describing our national condition. What share of children are immunized against measles, mumps and rubella? Answer: 92 percent. What state has the highest disposable per capita income? Answer: Connecticut, 33 percent above the national average. How big is the nation’s network of oil pipelines? Answer: 147,000 miles, about triple the length of the Interstate Highway System (46,751 miles).

Is Congress’s ISP-Logging Bill A Violation of the Fourth Amendment?

Be Scared, Very Scared! Imagine what Richard Nixon would have done with such a tool.  Read the story below.

Last week a congressional subcommittee approved the “Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011.” On its surface, that seems like a wholly altruistic endeavor by our congressional leaders and a law worthy of praise. Yet, when it comes to privacy and law enforcement, there are ulterior motives at play.

The bill, also know as H.R. 1981, would require Internet Service Providers such as Comcast or Cox Communications to retain the personal information of its users for up to 18 months. This “mandatory data retention” policy would include names, IP addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses etc. and allow investigators to track online behavior such as websites visited and messages posted on the Web. Essentially, if the government wants, it could track everything you have done online for the last year and a half without a warrant or user consent. The debate over mandatory data retention has been evolving for nearly a decade and has caused a ruckus among privacy groups that claim it is a violation of civil liberties and the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. 2010 Census: A New Portrait of America

2010 Census: A New Portrait of America

This is a very interesting video from the US Census Bureau. It describe why the 2010 census is probably the most important one in US history.  It explains how the census is used by all levels of government to allocate funds for services.  This would be appropriate for use in many classes and groups.

Library of Congress (LOC) on Twitter

This was posted today on the LOC blog:

We Tweet, Therefore We Are

Posted on: January 27th, 2009 by Matt Raymond

Howdy, folks! (Sorry, my Wyoming roots are showing.)  The Library of Congress finally has its own official Twitter feed.  You can follow us here: http://twitter.com/librarycongress

“Library of Congress” was too long as a user name, so in the spirit of Twitter itself, we’ve been truncated.

As I’ve been alluding for some time, we are on the cusp of many more forays into the Web 2.0, and I hope to bring more announcements soon (most likely weeks, not months).  We are going to be pushing some incredible content out to the world in new ways and in new spaces — just a smattering of the millions and millions of digital resources we have online, of course, but presented with the fantastic interactivity of these new Web tools.

We also hope it will be an enticement for folks to check out the vast treasure trove of free resources at LOC.gov.
