#Socialscope for the #BlackBerry @socialscope

Socialscope for the Blackberry is one of the best apps I ever used on my Blackberry.  It brings together Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and Flickr into one convenient package.   It works much better than the native apps for Twitter and Facebook.   Foursquare provides just a check-in function because socialscope does not have any built in location capabilities.   It also allows you to post to multiple Twitter accounts and directly to Facebook pages.   It is currently in a private beta but it is relatively easy to get an invite by going to getsocialscope.com .

I do have several problems with how the creators of socialscope are supporting the beta.  It seems to me that they either don’t understand social networking in terms of providing user support or else they are doing this as a side line.  It has been in private beta for two years.  The frustrations from their users can be seen on Facebook.  They have put one post on the site and that is it.  They have never responded on the discussion board.   They have a twitter account at http://twitter.com/socialscope/ . They do occasionally reply to tweets.

I have some suggestions for the developers of socialscope:

1.       Open up a support forum for your beta testers.

2.       Answer posts on Facebook.

3.       Add more functionality for foursquare either by providing location services within socialscope or by providing a way to change my location manually via foursquare’s mobile site.

4.       Add more services such as LinkedIn.

5.       Show your users that you are listening.

Such a great product deserves more attention from everyone.  Socialscope can also be contacted at:

Great new Add On for Firefox — Fotofox

I love this new add-on for Firefox. I just installed it tonight but have already decided it makes using Flickr much easier for me. I have been uploading photos to my Flickr account using it. Here is a screenshot of it in action:

You can find Fotofox here:
Fotofox | Firefox Add-ons | Mozilla Corporation

Easily select, tag, title and upload pictures from your computer to an online photo album. Works with Flickr, Tabblo, 23hq, Smugmug, and Marela.

Creating Technorati Tags

What is suggested below will work for any web page or message board or forum such as this, not just blogs. From Technorati:

“If your blog software doesn’t support categories or you’re not sure, you can still participate. To associate a post with a Technorati Tag all you have to do is tag your post by including a special link in the body of your post. Please note that two word tags should be joined by a “+”. For example:

<a href=”http://technorati.com/tag/[tagname]” rel=”tag”>[tagname]</a>

<a href=”http://technorati.com/tag/[tagname]+[tagname]” rel=”tag”>[tagname tagname]</a>

<a href=”http://technorati.com/tag/global+warming” rel=”tag”>global warming</a>

The [tagname] can be anything, but it should be descriptive. Please only use tags that are relevant to the post. You do not need to include the brackets, just the descriptive keyword for your post. Just make sure to include rel=”tag”.

You do not have to link to Technorati. You can link to any web page that ends in a tag – even your own site! For example, these tag links would also be included:

o <a href=”http://apple.com/ipod” rel=”tag”>iPod</a>

o <a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity” rel=”tag”>Gravity</a>

o <a href=”http://flickr.com/photos/tags/chihuahua” rel=”tag”>Chihuahua</a>”

The next step is to “ping” technorati with the tags you created. Go to: http://www.technorati.com/ping

and fill in the search form.

There are also tools for doing this. I use one in FireFox called tagutil. It is an extension and works great. I used it to create the tags below.

Edgy ALA campaign for 2007

Thank you to Jessamyn for this.  You can see more on her Flickr feed.  Someone in PR at ALA needs to “think” a little harder before they put together a campaign. This will be fun to see what happens.  It reminds me of the “Virginia is for Lovers” campaign and all of the really bad tee shirts that resulted from that.

come together @ your library on Flickr – Photo Sharing!
