Google Chrome Apps? Fact or Fiction?

Sick of Chrome apps and extensions that are just bookmarks?  I am!  The majority are simply bookmarks on the Chrome Dashboard on the New Tab.   So far I have found several that I like that are real applications:

·         The New York Times

·         Weather Window Beta by Weatherbug

·         Huffington Post News Glide

·         USA Today

·         Aviary – Image Editor

·         ScribeFire for Chrome

Note that I use several extensions for enhancing my uses of Chrome and for testing web pages.  These include:

bit.ly | a simple URL shortener - Version: 1.2.1.9

Shorten, share, and track your links, right from your browser, instantly

Firebug Lite for Google Chrome - Version: 1.3.1.7759

foursquare - Version: 1.0

LastPass is a free password manager and form filler.

LibX for Google Chrome - Version: 2.0.15033.0

LibX (libx.org) for Google Chrome

Posterous for Chrome - Version: 0.2

RSS Subscriptions with FEED: Handler Support - Version: 1.8.4

Adds one-click subscription to your toolbar. Adds support for the registered feed handler, such as Outlook 2007 or 2010.

Adds a toolbar button with various web developer tools. The official port of the Web Developer extension for Firefox.

ScribeFire for Chrome

I am using the ScribeFire for Chrome app.  It seems to work very well, much like the FireFox version.  It accesses tags I have already used in Posterous.  This may be a good alternative to using my email to post to Posterous.

Browser Add-on Aims to Ease Attribution of Open Content [http://www.libraryjournal.com/]

Open Attribute, a free add-on for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers unveiled this week, was created as part of a Mozilla Drumbeat collaborative project which aims to make open content more accessible. Its simple but ingenious strategy is one that academics and librarians can appreciate: it makes open content easier to attribute.

Academic Add-Ons for web browsers

I have three pages I have been working on that list what I believe to be the best or most useful academic add-ons for web browsers:

·         Google Chrome

·         Mozilla FireFox

·         Microsoft Internet Explorer

Please take a look and send me suggestions as to others I should add.  The one that needs the most work is the Internet Explorer page.  IE is not my browser of choice.  The target audience is our students, faculty, and staff at TC3.

You will find a web form in the right hand column where you can send me suggestions or contact me via e-mail (dreww@tc3.edu) or via Twitter (http://twitter.com/BillDrew4) or Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/billdrew ).

FireFox: Add-ons for academic use

I have created a web page for  Firefox add-ons for academic use at http://ow.ly/2U4dg .  It is part of the Library’s InfoLab New Tools set of web resources. It is a work in progress. I am looking for more add-ons for FireFox of academic nature.  Send me your ideas and comments, please.  I have alos created a page for Google Chrome.  You can find it in the menu on the right side of the page linked to above.
