Quality of Future Librarians – No need to worry!!

I originally wrote this post in 2005.  I am reposting it because it is even more true now than it was 6 years ago.  I have seen this with the adjunct librarians I have been working with at MYPOW and from the many posts I read via Twitter, Facebook, and now Google+.

I am serving on the LITA/SIRSI and LITA/Larew Scholarships Committee. I am extremely impressed with the credentials and motivations of the applicants for the various scholarships. While I will not comment on any individual, the majority of applicants are well qualified and well grounded in an ethic that reflects well on the future of the profession. I am also finding this experience of working on this committee to be very fullfilling and very positive. It is extremely difficult to select from such a strong group of applicants. I am no loonger concerned about our future librarians. We must now strive to make opportunities for them by providing employment and chances for advancement.

NYLA ESRT program: World Refugee Day: An Evening to Raise Awareness, 6/20/11

NYLA Ethnic Services RoundTable is cosponsoring:

World Refugee Day: An Evening to Raise Awareness of the Refugees in the New York City Area and Throughout the World.

Location: NYPL Mid-Manhattan Library (6th  floor)

455 Fifth Avenue (at 40th Street), New York, NY 10016

Date: Monday, June 20, 2011, 6:30 p.m.

In 2001, the U.N. General Assembly designated June 20 as World Refugee Day.  Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message on that day in 2010 urged the world to ". . .reaffirm the solidarity and burden-sharing by the international community."  He added that, "Refugees have been deprived of their homes but they must not be deprived of their futures."   A panel of representatives of national and international organizations involved in refugee resettlement will speak and answer questions like: What is a refugee? Where do they come from? Where do they go to, and for how long? What kinds of problems do they have? What kind of help is out there for them? and What do their futures hold?

John Solecki of the New York office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Bob Carey of the International Rescue Committee, and Maria Blaque-Belair of the RIF Asylum Help Center will share information about the issues of refugees and their resettlement. Bushra Perreira, an Iraqi woman living in the U.S. with recently-granted asylee status, will speak about her experiences.

This program is being co-sponsored by the Ethnic Services Round Table of the New York Library Association.

Everyone is welcome.  Please join us on Monday, June 20 at 6:30PM.

Transforming our Bibliographic Framework (LC initiative)

From Library of Congress:

The Library of Congress is sharing the statement, “Transforming our Bibliographic Framework,” for the benefit of its external constituents.  Deanna B. Marcum, LC’s Associate Librarian for Library Services, will be leading the initiatives that will drive this transformation process.  The Library is mounting the statement now for early review.  Following the upcoming Annual Conference of the American Library Association in New Orleans, where discussions about the statement will occur, the Library will make further announcements.  A web site has been established for the Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative (http://www.loc.gov/marc/transition) and that will be the central place for plans, news, and progress.  It will indicate formal channels established for working with the community, receiving feedback and input from various sources and stakeholders, and how the Library will proceed in this major undertaking.
