Looking to the Future

Effective July 30, 2012 I will be retiring from Tompkins Cortland Community College.  While I may be retiring from my current position, I am looking for new opportunities in the world of libraries and beyond.   I am also considering consulting and training opportunities in the following areas as:

· Social networking in libraries, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations

· Wireless networking in libraries, educational institutions, and non-profits.

· Planning and implementation of Integrated Library Systems.

· Management of e-resources including eBooks and eSerials.

· Website design and management using Dreamweaver.

· End user training in web page design, social media, use of Google services, and database and internet research.

· OCLC services such as WorldCat Local, Connexion, and other OCLC services.

· Innovation and Change.

If you are aware of any opportunities that you feel may be of interest to me, please contact me via e-mail at bill.drew@gmail.com .  My vita is available on my new website and blog at http://BillTheLibrarian.com .

Thank you and have a wonderful summer!

Power of SUNY Report Card Launch

Please join us as we launch the first SUNY Report Card on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 via video and social media LIVE on SUNY.edu.

THE SUNY REPORT CARD

"You Can Hold Us To It"

It’s about accountability. Never before has the State University of New York put its goals out on the table and asked New Yorkers to "hold us to it."

Until now.

As part of Chancellor Nancy Zimpher’s five-year strategic plan for SUNY – called The Power of SUNY – we are introducing our annual "report card," which will evaluate and track the progress of SUNY across a spectrum of critical areas.

SUNY will not only measure success in teaching and research, we will also embrace our public mission to play a role in the critical issues facing our state, including helping to turn around New York’s economy and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers. To do this, we have indentified priorities in alternative energy, “cradle-to-career” education, globalization, diversity, research and innovation, health and wellness, and the impact SUNY students, faculty, and staff can have on building stronger communities statewide.

The SUNY Report Card will use both internally and externally validated metrics to track our progress in these areas. More importantly, it will allow the public to hold us accountable for the progress we make as a system.

Please join us as we launch the first SUNY Report Card on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 via video and social media LIVE on SUNY.edu.

RRLC’s Academic Library of the Year.
The Rochester Regional Library Council’s 2011 Academic
Library of the Year is LeRoy V. Good Library at Monroe
Community College.  The statement, “this library has
been of great value in my academic pursuits”, was one
of the nominating statements RRLC received.

LIBRARY DIRECTORS MEET in COOPERSTOWN
“What you do for students, working one-on-one with them
is priceless”.  SUNY Provost David Lavallee speaking at
the 2011 SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD) meeting
also commented on how his academic career at SUNY, New
Paltz and other institutions has included the positive
benefit of overseeing academic libraries.  He urged the
directors to look at the totality of shared endeavors
across SUNY to then see the benefit of such collaborations
for their particular campus.

Indeed, the group adopted the “one vision, one voice”
Power of SUNY Libraries strategic plan during the April
meeting in Cooperstown.  Prior to that, projects and
ideas for making the plan real were discussed in focus
groups on assessment, collections, governance/administration,
LMS/sytems and user services.

In addition, a reframing of the SUNYConnect Advisory
Council (S.A.C.) was approved.  Subject to bylaw changes,
the “SUNYConnect Coordinating Committee” (SCC) will be a
standing committee reporting to the SCLD Executive
Board.  The representative from that latter group will
be the SCC Convener and with SCC made up of SCLD members
representing each SUNY sector, SUNYLA, OLIS representatives
as well as ad hoc task force representation.  SCC will
“coordinate, provide input and track progress of
SUNYConnect related activities”.

A SUNYConnect Financial Committee (SFC) structure was also
approved.  Among other activities, this group would
address changes to the SUNYConnect financial plan.  The
SFC will also report to the SCLD Executive Board and has
a proposed make-up similar to the SCC.

Final details on both of these groups await needed bylaw
changes.

Visit the SCLD web site for updates related to the
strategic plan, various working groups and upcoming
governance structure changes.

The following appointments to the SCLD Executive Board
(and related groups) were approved by the full
Council – Vice Chair/Chair Elect – Andrew White
(Stony Brook); Treasurer – Gail Wood (Cortland); NYSHEI
Representatives – Patrick Callahan (Purchase) and
Chui-Chun Lee (New Paltz); CUNY Liaison – N.J. Wolfe (FIT).

PROPOSED SUNYCONNECT TIMELINE
A draft timeline of possible future SUNYConnect
developments has been presented to S.A.C. and to SCLD.
The goal is to sketch out efforts that are needed related
to electronic resources, a possible SUNYConnect discovery
system and a replacement for the current SUNYConnect
library management system.

While subject to change, the timeline is presented here
to provide information to the SUNYConnect community on
current thinking in regard to these inter-related
topics.

UPCOMING EVALUTION of ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
SUNYConnect is about to commence a review of electronic
resources.  Specifically under review will be resources
acquired collectively with the exception of ScienceDirect.

The current agreement for EBSCO resources ends June 30,
2012.  Prior to that, the SUNYConnect Electronic Resources
Team will be reviewing options and seeking to improve
information access across SUNYConnect.

The E_Res Team is
Shafeek Fazal – Maritime (Tech Sector representative);
Connie Holberg – Jefferson (Community College representative);
Mohamed Hussain – Downstate (Health Sciences representative);
Fritz Messere – Oswego (Faculty representative);
Katie Sacco – Fredonia (Comprehensive Colleges representative);
John Schumacher – OLIS;
Ed Shephard – Binghamton (University Center representative).

Get in touch with your sector representative on the team if
you’ve got a suggestion, comments or ideas regarding
SUNYConnect electronic resources.

BINGHAMTON HOSTS SCHOLARSHIP CONFERENCE
“Changes in the library world and in scholarly work
require fleet innovation as ideas emerge, change and become
routine”, with this Beth Brown, Scholarly Communication
Librarian, Binghamton University introduced the “Publishing,
Promoting and Preserving Scholarship @ SUNY” conference
April 7, 2011.

The conference (with funding from SUNY’s Conversations
in the Disciplines program) included an impressive array
of speakers and attendees from the library and research
communities.  The keynote speech by Todd Carpenter (National
Information Standards Organization) began with a brief
history of standards in publishing and made the first
reference of the day to the “semantic web” as we move
towards more machine-mediated processing and the increasing
frequency of texts being read by machines.  His suggestion
was to pay attention to changes occuring outside of the
academy via rapid developments in technology and software.
In regard to the National Science Foundation mandate for
data management plans, Carpenter said “I think libraries
have a great opportunity to provide a home to the data
created by our researchers”.

Andrew White (Interim Dean, Stony Brook/Stony Brook HSC)
presented the stark landscape of dwindling library budgets
and the challenges of licensing the research materials
needed.  Representing the Scholarly Publishing and Academic
Resources Coalition (SPARC), Patricia Renfro (Columbia) gave
an update on open access publishing and archiving.

Open source software projects highlighted included
Mendeley and VIVO.  Vendor presentations were made by
SUNY Press, JSTOR, JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments)
and Berkeley Electronic Press.

Thanks to Binghamton, SUNY CID and the conference presenters
for a good conference on important topics.

ADDITIONAL SUNYConnect UPDATES

(June 15-17, 2011)

Call For Proposals

The 2011 SUNYLA Conference will be hosted in Plattsburgh, which borders the Adirondacks, Quebec, Vermont, and Lake Champlain. These shared boundaries both define and strengthen Plattsburgh’s culture. SUNY Librarians and Libraries are now increasingly redefining old borders or finding new partners. This year’s SUNYLA Conference will examine and explore new connections that facilitate collaboration across the library, the campus, the community, and the SUNY system. The SUNYLA 2011 program planning committee welcomes sessions related to collaboration across shared territories and the possibilities created by redefining roles within and outside the Library. If you are submitting proposals for multiple sessions, please submit a form for each session. Preconference Sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 15, and the main conference will be Thursday and Friday June 16-17.

Deadline for Proposals: March 15th, 2011

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

·         New collaborations between library departments (i.e., ILL and Collection Development)

·         Building partnerships with campus departments (i.e., Writing Centers, Learning or Tutoring Centers, IT Departments)

·         Finding new partners in the community (i.e., connecting to high schools, businesses, and community organizations)

·         Innovations that create new roles for the library (i.e., Institutional Repositories, Scholarly Publishing Centers)

·         The blended librarian: how will changes in departments and campuses redefine librarianship? (i.e., What is the role of the collection development librarian in a patron-driven world?  How will the role of the reference librarian change in the next 10 years?)

·         Efficiency through collaboration: how have collaborations and initiatives focused on sharing resources and knowledge improved individual libraries and SUNY libraries as a whole?

·         How will new trends or technologies change librarianship and the Library in the future? How can librarians stay current and prepared to take advantage of new roles and opportunities?

·         Knowledge through collaboration: SUNY librarians sharing their experience/knowledge – i.e., assessment of services, gaming, web 2.0 technologies (creating pod-casts/you tube videos), mobile technologies

Please consider submitting a proposal for a pre-conference workshop, a conference session, or a poster presentation.

·         Conference sessions are either 45 or 90 minutes.  Choose the time frame that is most appropriate.

·         Pre-conference workshops are either 90 minutes or 3 hours and should include some interactive or hands-on component. Computer labs will be available for up to 3 pre-conference workshops. Please indicate whether you prefer or need a computer lab for your pre-conference session.
